WHY SUPPLEMENTS?

Should You Be Taking Supplements?

Even the healthiest eating habits may require supplementation.  While maintaining  healthy eating habits is essential for obtaining most of the necessary nutrients, there are several reasons why supplements may still be necessary, even for individuals who follow well-balanced and nutritious dietary strategies.

Here are some key factors to consider:

   1.    Nutrient Deficiencies: Despite consuming a healthy diet, it is possible to have certain nutrient deficiencies. Factors such as soil depletion, food processing, cooking methods, and individual variations in nutrient absorption can affect the nutrient content of foods. Some nutrients, like vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin B12, may be challenging to obtain in sufficient amounts solely from food sources, making supplements a viable option.
   2.    Increased Nutrient Demands: Certain life stages or situations may increase nutrient requirements beyond what can be obtained through diet alone. For example, pregnant and breastfeeding women require higher levels of certain vitamins and minerals to support the growth and development of their babies. Athletes, individuals with intense physical activity, or those recovering from illness or surgery may also have increased nutrient needs that cannot be fully met through diet alone.
   3.    Specific Health Conditions: Some health conditions may interfere with nutrient absorption or increase nutrient losses, even when following a healthy diet. For instance, individuals with gastrointestinal disorders, such as celiac disease or Crohn's disease, may have impaired absorption of nutrients from food. In such cases, supplements can help bridge the nutritional gap and prevent deficiencies.
   4.    Age-Related Factors: As people age, their nutrient requirements may change due to physiological changes, reduced appetite, or medications that interfere with nutrient absorption. Older adults may have an increased risk of deficiencies in nutrients like vitamin B12, calcium, and vitamin D. Supplementation can help address these nutrient gaps and support overall health.
   5.    Convenience and Practicality: In some cases, taking supplements can provide convenience and practicality, especially for busy individuals or those with restricted diets (e.g., vegetarians or vegans). Supplements can offer a convenient and reliable way to obtain specific nutrients without having to rely solely on food choices or extensive meal planning.
   6.    Individual Variations: Each person has unique nutritional needs and variations in nutrient absorption, metabolism, and utilization. What works well for one person may not be sufficient for another. Supplements can provide a targeted approach to address individual nutrient requirements and promote optimal health.

However, it is important to note that supplements are not intended to replace healthy eating habits. They should complement and support well-balanced healthy eating habits and dietary strategies.  The supplements in our offering were carefully considered for need by the average person and we believe that what we have to offer accommodates the needs of most people.
